1/10/2011 Joe Gores dies on an anniversary

January 10, 2011.  Joe Gores passed away, fifty years to the day after Dashiell Hammett.  Both of these men were private detectives before they turned to crime fiction.  Gores wrote a novel using Hammett as the main character, another that was an authorized prequel to The Maltese Falcon, and a short story in which one of his own characters worked with Hammett's Continental Op.

  1. Thanks for this post. I hadn't heard of Gores and will check out his work.

Here are a couple of upcoming dates, one right around the corner and one on February.

January 13, 1968 - Johnny Cash recorded his concert album At Folsom Prison, including the hit song Folsom Prison Blues. The album, recorded live for an audience of prisoners at California's Folsom State Prison, sold over three million copies. Rolling Stone magazine later named it one of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

February 6, 2014 – Amazon Prime premiered the pilot episode of Bosch, based on the detective character in Michael Connelly’s mystery series. The pilot’s success led Amazon to order nine more episodes, scheduled to begin streaming in February 2015.

    Best wishes,

  2. Peter, thanks for the comments. As you will see today I already had Johnny Cash lined up and ready to go, but I have added Bosch to my database. I have something else planned for Feb 6 this year, however.

  3. Hi Rob,

Great to see you had Folsom Prison already lined up. I figured you’d filled most of your dates, at least for the first part of the year. I can post some more for your database. I often stumble across tidbits in story research and from random reading and idle curiosity.

Really cool idea for a blog.

    Best wishes,
    Peter
