July 24, 1775. Eugene Francois Vidocq was born on this date in Arras, France. He grew up to be a criminal, soldier, spy, and founder of the
Sûreté. He is considered the first private investigator, and the first modern criminologist, as well.
His memoir is often thought of as early detective fiction, which I suppose is not a compliment. But he certainly influenced crime writers for a century.
