September 16, 1984. I could practically fill the whole calendar this month with premieres of TV crime shows, since September is the traditionally beginning of the prime time season. But I will give you more variety.
However, today we look at Miami Vice. It started with a brainstorm by NBC honcho Brandon Tartikoff: "MTV cops." Anthony Yerkovich ran with that, creating a series about cops in the wild southeast, fighting drugs and prostitution and boring clothes. The music and fashion were up to date, trendsetting, and earth colors were not allowed. The show ran for 111 episodes.
